New data reveals that 13,000 jobs were lost in June – the worst since the pandemic – and only 22,000 jobs were added in August
Washington D.C — Not only are Trump and congressional Republicans’ tariffs raising costs on working-class families to pay for billionaire tax breaks, according to today’s jobs report, they are costing American jobs at an alarming rate. Only 22,000 jobs were added last month – significantly less than economists estimated. Even worse, additional data shows that the economy actually lost 13,000 jobs in June of this year. This comes as prices for everyday necessities like utilities and beef continue to skyrocket.
Additionally, the report shows that:
- Unemployment increased to 4.3% in August – the highest level since 2021
- 12,000 manufacturing jobs were lost, thanks to tariffs
- 7,000 construction jobs were lost
- 16,000 public sector workers lost their jobs, mostly due to DOGE layoffs
- Wage growth has slowed to 3.7% – the slowest growth since July 2024
“There is no denying it. Republican tariffs are not only raising prices, they are costing the American people jobs – all so Republicans can give more tax breaks to millionaires and billionaires,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Today’s jobs report is a result of the Republican agenda in action: making working-class people’s lives harder and more expensive to fund massive handouts to the ultra-wealthy. We need Republicans in Congress to stop supporting these cost-raising tariffs and reverse their pro-billionaire tax law.”
