Washington D.C — The Republican-led government shutdown may have come to an end, but the damage to working families from Republican policies has only just begun. Republicans in Congress passed the largest-ever cuts to Medicaid and SNAP earlier this year, and they continue to refuse to extend health care tax credits that help millions of Americans access basic health care. This government shutdown was a snapshot of the Republicans’ agenda – put billionaires first and working people last.
During the shutdown, Republicans cut off food assistance for over 40 million Americans and refused to prevent health care costs from rising, but – shocker – they found time to carve out even more tax breaks for giant corporations and the wealthy. It is a fundamental betrayal of millions of Americans who are struggling to afford basic necessities.
“While the shutdown may have come to a close, congressional Republicans’ war on working families has only just begun,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “From massive cuts to SNAP and Medicaid, to billionaire and corporate tax breaks, Republicans in Congress are putting the ultra-wealthy first and the working class last. We need Republicans to come to their senses, stop their cuts to food assistance, lower energy costs, and sign on to the discharge petition to extend health care tax credits so that working people can afford crucial health care.”
