Republicans in Congress Are Starting to Realize That Raising Costs on Everything Isn’t a Solid “Affordability Agenda”

Washington D.C — For months, higher prices on everyday goods, fueled by Trump’s tariffs and congressional Republicans’ cuts to vital programs like Medicaid and SNAP, have made it increasingly difficult for working families to afford basic necessities like food, rent, prescription drugs, and more. Yet, Republicans in Congress are finally admitting that pushing policies that make life more expensive for everyday people isn’t a winning “affordability agenda.”

From NBC News

Nearly two dozen Republican senators, House members, strategists and congressional aides shared their concerns about their party’s handling of affordability in interviews with NBC News. Another six acknowledged the issue but said the party will settle on the right strategy to address it.

“People aren’t dumb,” [Republican Senator Josh] Hawley said. “They know when they go to the grocery store what it costs and what it doesn’t. They know what their rent costs. They know what their prescription drugs cost. And all of that stuff is too high. And they can’t afford it. And they know that.”

“There is no ‘message’ that can overcome the fact that Republicans in Congress are building an economy of, by, and for the billionaires while working people struggle to provide for their families,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “They’re refusing to extend vital health care tax credits, raising the cost of food, and cutting programs like Medicaid and SNAP, while enriching billionaires with permanent tax breaks. We’re fighting to unrig the system and make sure working families can afford to access everyday essentials.”
