Washington D.C — Several new reports released this week are highlighting the devastating consequences of congressional Republicans’ assault on SNAP. Since the passage of the Republican Tax Law, SNAP enrollment has plummeted in every single state and D.C. In Arizona alone, enrollment in SNAP has nosedived by 42%, a dramatic decline that has kicked nearly 373,000 people off the program. Nationwide, approximately 3.5 million people have been left without access to this vital program thanks to Republicans’ cuts.
Sadly, these numbers don’t reflect the full harm that congressional Republicans’ SNAP cuts have caused. Across twelve states with available data, over 720,000 children have lost SNAP. Studies have shown that children with access to SNAP have better health outcomes and are more food secure as adults. Republicans haven’t just cut access to food for millions of children, they are taking away access to a better quality of life for hundreds of thousands of children.
These SNAP cuts are also accelerating a food insecurity crisis that is affecting millions of Americans. A new report showed that 10% of households reported that they didn’t have enough food, and many are draining their savings just to feed themselves. And that was before Republicans pushed ahead with their war in Iran. Now, Americans are being squeezed on all sides by Republican cuts to SNAP and Medicaid, rising health care costs, skyrocketing gas prices, and tariffs which are jacking up prices nearly everywhere.
All of this – just so billionaires could get another tax break.
“I’m a single mother of three, and I drive for Lyft full time to support my family. Even working full time, I’ve been unable to access SNAP benefits since March thanks to Republicans’ cuts to SNAP,” said Tucson, Arizona resident Angelica G. “Costs are already rising everywhere because of Republicans’ tariffs and their war in Iran, and cutting food assistance is pushing families like mine over the edge. It’s difficult to work so hard to make ends meet just to watch Republicans in Congress give even more tax breaks to billionaires while cutting food services that families like mine rely on.”
“These heartwrenching numbers highlight the sheer cruelty of the Republican Tax Law,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “The damage goes beyond people’s ability to put food on the table. These SNAP cuts represent an assault on the livelihoods of millions of Americans. Republicans in Congress are jeopardizing the health and futures of hundreds of thousands of families and children – all so they could give more tax breaks to billionaires. It’s time that Republicans in Congress reverse course and undo these horrific SNAP cuts.”
