Washington D.C — Republicans in Congress ended 2025 by throwing 22 million Americans’ health care in jeopardy. Now, as we ring in 2026, will they do an about-face and stand with their constituents, or keep raising costs?
Sadly, Republicans have already caused significant harm, and millions of families nationwide are feeling the pinch. For example, Leighanne Safford and her husband, Lorry, spoke with NBC News last year and shared that they paid $278 per month in premiums in 2025, but, as of this week, they will have to pay around $1,800 per month, and they aren’t alone. Millions of Americans who rely on the Affordable Care Act (ACA) could see their premium payments double on average. Over 4 million Americans could lose access to health care altogether.
However, Republicans still have an opportunity to mitigate the damage they’ve done. This week, the House will vote on Democrats’ proposal to bring back the health care tax credits. Republicans in Congress are now at a crossroads – they can bring back the tax credits, or they can continue to put billionaires first and make life even more unaffordable for working-class Americans.
“If Congressional Republicans truly want to put their constituents first, they should vote to bring back these health care tax credits and safeguard health care for people like the Saffords,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “Because of their inaction, health care costs have already skyrocketed for millions of families across the country. Republicans in Congress should ring in the new year by bringing back Tax credits that kept health care affordable.”
