Republicans in Congress Who Voted Twice for a Plan to Cut Medicaid Sign a Hollow Letter Claiming They Want to Protect Medicaid

Washington, D.C. — Earlier this week, a group of House Republicans sent a wishy-washy, vaguely worded letter to House Republican leadership claiming that they oppose cuts to Medicaid. That would be news to their constituents, since virtually every single Republican that signed this letter voted – not once, but TWICE – to advance a plan to cut Medicaid to pay for tax breaks for billionaires. Even in this letter, they leave the door open for drastic cuts to Medicaid. This letter is simply a PR stunt to cover up the fact that the Republican plan will force massive cuts to Medicaid. It is a betrayal of the millions of Americans who rely on Medicaid for health care – all for the benefit of the ultra-wealthy.

“Working families don’t want their members of Congress to say they support Medicaid. They want them to actually support Medicaid and vote to protect Americans’ health care,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “The Republicans in Congress who signed this letter cannot have it both ways. They cannot claim to support working- and middle-class families that rely on Medicaid while actively voting to advance a plan to cut this vital program to further enrich billionaires through massive tax breaks. If the Republicans that signed on to this letter mean what they say, they will change course and oppose any and all efforts to cut Medicaid going forward.”
