Washington D.C — Just two months after Republicans in Congress passed their pro-billionaire tax law, rural communities are already losing access to health care. Augusta Medical Group – a rural Virginia health care company – announced it is shuttering three clinics along Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, explicitly citing the Republican Tax Law’s devastating Medicaid cuts.
According to a Senate letter citing researchers at the University of North Carolina, there are 338 rural hospitals at risk of closure nationwide thanks to the drastic Medicaid cuts in the Republican Tax Law. If Republicans in Congress don’t reverse course, more and more of these at-risk health centers will close, leaving rural populations without the health care they need.
Bottom line: Republicans in Congress are putting their own constituents at risk so billionaires and giant corporations can walk away with another massive tax break.
“These closures are the congressional Republican agenda in action: cuts to health care for rural moms and families, tax breaks for millionaires and billionaires,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “These closures are not an accident — they are the direct result of a law written to serve the wealthy and leave working people behind, and unless Republicans in Congress reverse course, more working-class Americans will be left behind while the rich get even richer.”
