Sen. Tillis Announces Retirement, Admits The GOP Tax Scam Will Make Massive Medicaid Cuts. Will Other Republican Senators Join Him In Voting Against It?

Tillis Urged His Colleagues To Withhold Their Votes For Bill To Cut Millions of Americans’ Health Coverage

WASHINGTON D.C. — We already knew the Republican Tax Scam would make historic cuts to Medicaid and that the bill is deeply unpopular with a majority of Americans. Americans across the country have been speaking out and protesting this bill back home and in Washington, DC. Now, Republican senators are admitting it themselves — Senator Thom Tillis would rather retire than face the blowback of throwing millions of people off Medicaid.

Now the key question is: Will other Republican senators join him?

“It’s not every day that Republicans admit their own tax scam will leave millions of Americans without health care. But that’s exactly what Senator Tillis did on Sunday,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Every single Republican senator has to decide whether they’re more afraid of Trump than the consequences of taking away lifesaving health coverage from their own constituents.”

Tillis from the Senate floor:

“What do I tell 663,000 people in two years, three years, when President Trump breaks his promise by pushing them off of Medicaid because the funding’s not there anymore?”

“…Republicans are about to make a mistake on health care and betray a promise. It is inescapable that this bill in its current form will betray the very promise that Donald J. Trump made in the Oval Office…”

“We owe it to the American people, and I owe it to the people of North Carolina, to withhold my affirmative vote until it’s demonstrated to me that we’ve done our homework.”
