Washington, D.C. — In a March 26 telephone town hall, Congressman Tom Kean Jr. (NJ-07) declared, “We need to make sure we also are protecting Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security for their intended beneficiaries.” Last week, however, he voted in the House Energy and Commerce committee’s markup session for the largest cut to Medicaid in US history.
Despite pledging to protect Medicaid, Congressman Kean Jr. voted to advance a bill that:
- Cuts Medicaid by more than $600 billion
- Kicks 10 million people, including as many as 386,000 New Jerseyans, off Medicaid
- Leaves more than 13.7 people uninsured
“Kicking 10 million people and nearly 400,000 New Jerseyans off Medicaid doesn’t sound like ‘protecting’ Medicaid to me. Congressman Kean Jr. promised his constituents that he would protect their health care and then immediately broke his word,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “Thankfully, Tom Kean Jr. has yet another opportunity to show his constituents exactly whose side he’s on. Will he stand with the millions of Americans and hundreds of thousands of New Jerseyans who deserve to keep their health care or the billionaires who want yet another tax break?”
