The Holidays are Over, but Republicans Keep Expanding Their Wishlist of Cost Raising Measures to Give Bigger Tax Cuts to Billionaires
Washington, D.C. — After campaigning to lower costs for Americans, President Trump and Republicans in Congress are considering a long wishlist of measures to pay for their plan to give tax breaks to the wealthy and corporations – measures that will make life more expensive for everyday Americans.
Republicans in Congress are openly discussing including universal tariffs in their upcoming tax package in order to pay for the cost of massive tax breaks for the wealthy and corporations. “In fact, it’s been discussed and debated,” House Budget Committee Chairman Jodey Arrington told Reuters. These tariffs would fall on working families by raising the costs of countless everyday goods that people need to get by.
In addition to tariffs, Republicans are floating a growing number of other policies that would raise costs for everyday Americans to pay for their tax package. This wishlist now includes:
- Ending the home mortgage tax deduction, making it even more difficult to afford a home
- Imposing new taxes for people whose workplaces have gyms
- Imposing new taxes for employer-provided meals and lodging
- Taxing scholarship and fellowship income
- Slashing Medicaid, which helps low-income and elderly Americans access health care
- Ending tax credits that lower the cost of Affordable Care Act insurance plans
“Congressional Republicans’ wishlist for revenue raisers is really just an ever-growing list of ways to screw over everyday Americans who are already struggling to make ends meet so that they can give greedy billionaires and corporations even more tax breaks. If you have a gym at your office, they want to tax you for it, but if you’re rich enough to have a gym on your private yacht, they want to give you a tax break. How does that help working people? ” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “What families really want are lower costs and the opportunity to provide for their loved ones, not more tax breaks for the same corporations that make life unaffordable.”
