The Real State of the Union: Working Families Are Paying the Price Thanks to Republicans’ Policies

Washington, DC – Following President Trump’s State of the Union address last night, it’s important to remember that congressional Republicans are not bystanders to higher tariffs and massive health care cuts for millions of Americans – they are the fuel to the fire. Republicans in Congress have powered nearly every major policy President Trump touted. Now, working families are paying the price. From higher costs, massive cuts to health care to slashing food assistance, Republicans in Congress have made life even more unaffordable for working families.

Republicans in Congress passed the largest cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in history to fund tax breaks for billionaires and corporations and a massive expansion of ICE funding. They backed cost-raising tariffs that cost households an average of $1,000 in 2025. They allowed enhanced ACA tax credits to expire, putting millions of Americans at risk of losing coverage. These outcomes are not accidental – they are a direct consequence of Republicans in Congress putting the wants of billionaires over the needs of their constituents.

“President Trump doubled down on an agenda that is making life more expensive for working Americans, but we should not forget that it is congressional Republicans who have made it possible,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “They voted to rip away health care and food assistance. They voted for tariffs that raise prices for working families. They chose tax breaks for billionaires and corporations over their constituents. Americans are struggling to afford basic necessities because Republicans in Congress decided that billionaires matter more than the working people they are supposed to represent.”
