Washington D.C — Today, the Supreme Court is hearing a case against Republicans’ cost-raising tariffs, which are making life even more unaffordable for everyday Americans. This case could decide if many Americans can afford to buy food and other everyday essentials. But while nine unelected justices’ decisions will have serious ramifications, we should never have gotten to this point. Republicans in Congress could have stopped Trump’s tariffs, but, instead, they endorsed them and repeatedly allowed them to continue.
The result? Families are paying more for nearly everything they buy. These tariffs have driven up prices on everyday essentials – from food and furniture to clothing and electronics – making life harder for working-class Americans already struggling with high costs. Republicans in Congress could end this hardship with a single vote. Instead, they repeatedly backed the tariffs and voted for the largest cuts to Medicaid and SNAP in history to give billionaires massive tax breaks, and now, they are keeping the government closed to avoid lowering Americans’ health care costs.
“As the Supreme Court hears a case with implications for whether Americans can afford groceries, school supplies, and more, people will remember that Republicans in Congress could end these disastrous tariffs today and should have done so a long time ago,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “These tariffs are nothing more than a tax on working Americans, and Republicans in Congress have voted time and again to keep them in place. While billionaires and corporations get tax breaks and Republicans continue to wreak havoc on our economy, families are paying more for basic goods they need to live. Republicans in Congress must act immediately to repeal Trump’s tariffs and finally put working people first.”
