Trump Hosts Farmers at White House While Farmers Across the Country Speak Out About Republicans Continuing To Raise Their Costs

Farmers Available for Interview To Discuss Republican War on Farmers

Washington, DC –  Farmers across the country are sounding the alarm as President Trump hosts farmers at the White House today, in an attempt to distract from the real harm Washington Republicans are inflicting on farmers across the country. From their war in Iran to tariffs to attacks on health care and SNAP, Trump and congressional Republicans’ agenda has wreaked havoc and raised costs for America’s farmers.

“My wife and I are trying our best to keep up with these rising costs but Republicans keep making it harder to make a living as a farmer. Their tariffs have sent our costs soaring and made it harder to sell our products. They ripped Medicaid away and forced rural hospitals to close. And now, higher fertilizer prices from their war have cost our farm between $40-$50,000,” said Nebraska farmer Ben Steffen. “It’s important that people understand the cost of all this, and what it’s doing to farming and rural communities. Republicans love to say they care about farmers, but they voted for this.”

The Republican war in Iran has sent fertilizer and diesel costs soaring, right as farmers’ critical spring planting season arrives. Key fertilizers have spiked as much as 35 percent since the start of the war. Diesel, which powers agricultural machinery, has climbed nearly 45 percent. These price surges come as farmers are already being squeezed by Trump and congressional Republicans’ cost-raising tariffs, attacks on health care, and cuts to SNAP.

Republicans’ tariffs have raised costs on nearly everything farmers need to keep their farms running. Their harmful trade wars have hurt their markets and made it harder for farmers to compete with large corporations. In 2025 alone, farm bankruptcies surged 46 percent under Republicans’ anti-farmer agenda. To make matters worse, congressional Republicans’ attacks on health care and food assistance have made it even harder for farmers and rural communities to get by. Congressional Republicans’ historic cuts to SNAP in history are taking billions of dollars in farm revenue away. Meanwhile, their cuts to Medicaid are disproportionately hurting rural communities and putting rural hospitals across the country at risk of closure.

“While Trump is posturing at the White House, America’s farmers are struggling to stay afloat. Trump and congressional Republicans’ policies are raising costs for farmers across the board, while giving large corporations massive tax breaks and making it harder than ever for farmers to compete,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Republicans promised to lower farmers’ costs, but their agenda continues to do the exact opposite.”
