Unrig Our Economy Steps into Tax Fight, Joins Group of 100+ Organizations Calling On Congress To Pass a Fairer Tax Code

Washington, D.C. – This week, Unrig Our Economy and over 100 advocacy organizations sent a letter to Congressional leaders laying out key changes that need to be made to our tax code in 2025 to prioritize the needs of everyday Americans first and make corporations and the wealthy pay their fair share ahead of the expiration of key portions of the Trump Tax Scam (Tax Cuts and Jobs Act or TCJA). The letter, addressed to Congressional leaders and the leaders of the Senate Finance Committee and the House Ways and Means Committee, calls for lawmakers to make a fairer tax code that generates more tax revenue and supports faster, more inclusive economic growth rather than giving even more handouts to the wealthy and corporations. Republican leadership has already expressed their intent to renew the TCJA through reconciliation early next term.

“The era of trickle-down economics rigged in favor of the wealthy and corporations that left working Americans in the dust must come to a close,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “The American people deserve a tax code that will make the ultra-wealthy and corporations pay their fair share while creating opportunity for working people. Unrig Our Economy is returning to its roots on the front lines of this fight for a fairer tax code. The stakes have never been higher.”

This letter laying out progressives’ tax policy agenda is the first action of Unrig Our Economy’s campaign to advocate for progressive tax reform leading up to the 2025 expiration of the Trump Tax Scam’s key components. Bringing together partners across the country, Unrig Our Economy will uplift the voices of everyday people and call out corporate greed and handouts to the ultra-wealthy, by advocating for Congress to finally make the wealthy and corporations pay their fair-share and deliver for working families.

“Unrig Our Economy’s engagement in the upcoming tax debate is an incredible asset to the landscape,” said Michael Linden, the former executive associate director at the White House Office of Management and Budget and a coordinator of the letter. “As the Trump tax cuts draw nearer to expiration, it is worth remembering that Unrig Our Economy, in its previous iteration as Tax March, was one of the leading voices in advocating for tax fairness and in holding then President Trump and his allies in Congress accountable for their unpopular tax cuts. I’m confident that Unrig Our Economy will be able to harness the public’s frustration with our skewed tax code and will be a positive force for building a better, fairer tax code.”

This type of fight is at the very core of Unrig Our Economy, which came about as a merger of Health Care Voter and Tax March, a coordinated set of marches across the country in 2017. Over five years, Tax March fought on the frontlines against the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, launching the Not One Penny coalition to hold Republicans accountable for their votes, a Repeal the Trump Tax Tour, and a Nuns on the Bus Tax Justice Truth Tour to drive momentum towards tax fairness.
