Washington D.C — A report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities (CBPP) reveals how millions of Americans – including roughly 2 million children – are losing SNAP faster than expected due to the Republican Tax Law’s cuts to the program. Since the cuts to SNAP passed last July, the number of people enrolled in federal food assistance programs has decreased by 13%.
This report shows how cuts to SNAP have left families worse off while millionaires and billionaires receive more tax breaks. This report comes days after Unrig Our Economy and Americans for Tax Fairness’ new SNAP report (in English and Spanish) showing that Latinos have been disproportionately affected by the Republican Tax Law’s cuts. It is estimated that more than 1.5 million Latinos have lost essential food assistance nationwide.
According to the CBPP report:
- The Congressional Budget Office estimated the law would cut SNAP by $187 billion (about 20%) through 2034, the largest SNAP cut in history.
- About 5.5 million people lost food assistance through SNAP in the year since the enactment of the Republican Tax Law.
- The latest U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) data show that SNAP participation in the average month in 2026 is on track to be about 4.5 million fewer people compared to the average month in 2025 — far greater than CBO’s prediction of 2.8 million fewer people in an average month in 2026 versus 2025.
- The most likely reason for the larger-than-expected cut is the impact of the Republican Tax Law shifting enormous new SNAP costs to states.
“Americans are losing SNAP faster than their states can prepare due to the Republican Tax Law,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “With everyday goods and services already increasing in price, families who rely on SNAP are having a harder time putting food on the table. Americans should not have to worry about how to feed their families.”
