President-elect Trump Suggests Raising Prices to Pay for Tax Breaks for the Wealthy and Corporations

Washington, D.C. — President-elect Trump reiterated in a post on Truth Social over the weekend that he and Republicans in Congress will “pay” for his massive tax breaks for the wealthiest Americans and corporations with tariffs that will directly increase costs on working families.

Just last month, President-elect Trump admitted it would be hard to make good on his promise to lower grocery prices for everyday Americans and turned around hours later to promise Wall Street executives that he would give corporations even bigger tax breaks. Now, President-elect Trump and congressional Republicans are suggesting Congress pay for these massive tax breaks using tariffs. Corporate executives have already been clear that they plan to pass the increased financial burden from the Republican tariffs directly to American consumers.

“Working people made themselves clear – they want to see lower prices on everything from everyday goods like groceries and diapers to health and child care costs. Instead, President-elect Trump and Congressional Republicans are planning to give handouts to large corporations and the ultra-wealthy and pay for it with tariffs, which will increase costs for Americans already struggling to get by,” said Unrig Our Economy spokesperson Kobie Christian. “It is despicable to see Republicans in Congress share plans to make life more expensive – all to continue lining the pockets of corporate interests.”
