Republicans Are Still Panicking Over Backlash to Their Own Health Care Cuts

And Honestly, They Should Be

Washington D.C — House Republicans voted to gut Medicaid and leave 16 million people without health insurance. Now, as the Senate prepares for its own votes on the Republican Tax Scam, the backlash House Republicans have gotten has Senate Republicans quaking in their boots.

On Monday, Senator Thom Tillis (R-NC) handed out flyers to his colleagues that detailed how much Republicans’ Medicaid cuts would hurt their own constituents. Multiple outlets report that Sen. Tillis has now resorted to privately warning colleagues that their constituents will hold them accountable for these cuts for years. Instead of freaking out and claiming to be expressing concern in private, the solution is simple for Sen. Tillis: Just vote no.

Sen. Tillis’ latest freakout comes as Unrig Our Economy announces a new ad in North Carolina featuring his constituent, Ashley, who shares the harrowing medical journey of her son Milo and how Medicaid is a lifeline for families like hers.

Sen. Tillis isn’t the only Senate Republican freaked out about being held accountable for taking away people’s health care to fund tax breaks for the rich. And they’re right to be scared.

  • Americans oppose the Republican Tax Scam by nearly a 2-1 margin
  • 70% don’t want elected officials to give more tax breaks to the ultra-rich, including 51% of Republicans
  • 83% of Americans have a favorable opinion of Medicaid
  • 60% of Americans believe the bill is more about ‘taking health coverage away from people who need it’ more than reducing fraud and waste
  • A majority of Americans believe the bill would negatively impact them

“Congressional Republicans should be panicking over being held accountable for advancing an unpopular bill that would rip health care away from their own constituents,” said Unrig Our Economy Campaign Director Leor Tal. “Senate Republicans still have an opportunity to put working families over billionaires and reject these historic health care cuts. But House Republicans can’t run away from their vote to leave 16 million Americans without health coverage. They should listen to their constituents’ anger and stop voting for Medicaid cuts to fund tax breaks for billionaires.”
